Husband and wife team Johnny and Nancy McLaughlin of Heartbreaking Dawns hot sauces and Food Network Chopped fame return to the Flea this weekend to heat up the January crowd with the debut of a new Caribbean-style papaya and red scotch bonnet sauce created exclusively for—yes—the legendary punk band Bad Brains.
According to Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jennifer, the idea for “Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce” appeared to him in a dream. “The name is funny and real to our lives and culture,” Jennifer told Obeygiant.com. “In an attempt to combine heat and sweet, with a lot of roots and love, the flavors were painstakingly tested by Doc [guitarist Dr. Know] and myself, and are also the inspiration for the ‘Fire Burn Babylon Hardcore Hot Sauce’ screenprint.” That print, as well as the bottle’s label, were designed by none other than renowned street artist Shepard Fairey. Celebrity hot sauces exist out there (we love our Big Papi David Ortiz tabasco), but no way are any as hardcore as this one.
Once the outdoor Smorg season gets swinging this spring, look out for bottle and print signings by Bad Brains themselves. But in the meantime, stop by this weekend for an exclusive first taste of that fight the system fire. So cool, er, hot!
